Bhopal Medical Appeal

The Bhopal Medical Appeal is a Brighton based charity which raises funds to support two clinics in Bhopal, India providing free treatment to families affected by the world’s worst industrial disaster; the deadly, toxic gas leak from the Union Carbide pesticide plant on 3rd December 1984. Today in Bhopal,100,000 people are still chronically sick from the effects of that night, while thousands are ill from contamination of their wells and stand-pipes by poisonous chemicals leaking from the derelict, abandoned plant. Union Carbide and its owner Dow Chemical continue to deny responsibility for the poisoning and refuse to clean up the factory.

The continued success of The Bhopal Medical Appeal depends heavily on the involvement of many kind individuals, trust funds and faith groups, both in the UK and abroad. There are still over 100,000 people suffering from chronic illness as a direct result of the 1984 disaster and a third generation is now blighted by the ongoing water contamination. The Sambhavna and Chingari clinics, which we support,  are the only places where both groups of people can get free, first-class healthcare. It means a great deal to patients and staff to know that they are supported and remembered in the UK and across the world.
