The AKU Society is a patient-led group for the debilitating genetic disease alkaptonuria (AKU). AKU, also known as ‘Black Bone Disease’, causes significant damage to the bones, cartilage, and tissues of those affected which ultimately leads to severe early onset osteoarthritis.
We work to support patients to manage their physical and mental health, whilst also driving research into a cure.
