Snowdonia Marathon

One of the hardest marathons for any charity runner to take on, this event in Wales continues to impress with outstanding reviews every year, friendliness of local people and beautiful scenery. If you are planning to do this run for charity, you will set off on a journey which encircles Snowdon, England and Wales's highest peak, so be ready to run up some hills.

About the race

Getting ready for this incredibly challenging marathon is as much of a test for any charity runner as actually running it. Getting to the start in late October, you will be lucky not to be cold and wet,as 9 times out of 10 the weather conditions will add to the already mammoth task ahead. All the runners always seem to be the most optimistic bunch of people you will meet and it is clear that this is a must to complete this race. As you get going in this incredibly beautiful part of Wales, you have to take on a steady 4 mile ascent and if the visibility is not great, it is a challenge for any runner. Once you have conquered this, you are rewarded with some fantastic views across Wales and a steady downhill section. Make sure you keep your pace though as you will soon find yourself heading back up hill again to Wanafawr before the final downhill to the finish and a well deserved piece of cake and hot drink. The support on the route, although small, really gives you a lift as people shout words of encouragement. It's always nice when supporters recognise the fact you have taken this event on and raised money for charity also.

Fundraising

You are taking on one of the toughest marathons in the country so aim for at least £1500 with this race. You will feel as if you could have raised a great deal more when you finish due to the sheer size of your task. You are running up Snowdon, well almost! Check out the run for charity fundraising A to Z for some great ideas to help you reach your target.

Support on race day

The race receives good support from the local people and you will see the odd charity at the race to cheer you on. Most of the support will be seen at the start and finish of the race.

Training

You must do plenty of hill training before this race or you will find yourself walking the majority of it. Give yourself at least an extra month to train above and beyond the normal marathon training time. You will not regret the extra effort!

Quality of race organisers

The race is impeccably organised . The medals, goody bags and t shirts are also excellent.
