Liverpool Marathon

A fantastic city running event and being relatively new it's good to see they have started off on the right track, especially with their inclusion of charities. The course is not the flattest in the world but it takes in a number of the great sights in and around Liverpool including the Mersey Tunnel, The Anglican Cathedral and a number of Liverpool's great parks.

About the race

A soon as you are warmed up and stood at the start of the Liverpool Marathon you know it's going to exceed your expectations. With the amount of support from charities and the local public, you feel as if you are about to run one of the long standing big city marathons. There are huge numbers of charity runners from an array of different charities, all getting ready to take on this race. The start of the event still needs to be ironed out as there may well be delays but this is clearly early teething problems. Once you get going, the cheers from the spectators are left ringing in your ears and you feel uplifted and ready to take on anything. The course is by no means the flattest in the world but in return it offers some fantastic views across Liverpool's picturesque skyline and through a number of its beautiful great parks. The most memorable part of the race for most runners is the Mersey Tunnel. You charge your way towards the end, often faster than you should, and you hear drums in the distance quite literally pounding in time with your feet. As you finish the race, there is a stretch by the Liver buildings which is very fitting and a huge gathering of supporters to cheer you over the line.

Fundraising

This marathon event is turning into a great event for the charity runner. Aim for at least £1,250 with this race. Work on getting potential donors to sponsor you a £1 a mile. Check out the run for charity fundraising A to Z for some great ideas to help you reach your target.

Support on race day

Liverpool has become such an iconic city and the support for the race really shows this. The local and national charities are becoming more and more visible in and around the course and the general public turns up in force to cheer on their fellow Liverpudlians.

Training

This is a full marathon and not the flattest course, so be sure to give yourself time to train for a marathon and if possible practise in areas that are not totally flat.

Quality of race organisers

All the information and guidance before the race is excellent, well presented and received on time. On the day, apart from the very start, the race runs very smoothly and it is clear that the people in charge are very confident in what they are doing and what they want to achieve.
