Galway Bay 10K & Half Marathon

A beautiful scenic charity run along Galway Bay, this truly is an Irish treasure. The views across the coastline are spectacular and the organisers are managing to build on the participant levels year on year. Not a huge charity following at present but definitely lots of potential for this to be a charity running event.

About the race

At the start of this running event you will be very happy that you have chosen to participate for charity as the views of the Irish coastline are incredible and make any hardships seem like a distant memory. The vibe with most of the runners is very good although even before you start you will be hit by some pretty powerful winds, a sign of things to come! As you get going with the other 2000 runners you get to enjoy 1 lap along Salthill Promenade at Galway Bay if you are a 10k runner or 2 if you are a half marathon runner. There is very little support along the race so the race lacks atmosphere but if you are happy out in the wild on your own this race is for you. You will see a few charity runners along the way but it is clear these races are very much for the individual runner. As you finish there are a few supporters around to cheer you over the line which does help to make it all feel worthwhile. They really look after you in the true Irish way at the end of the race, there are free massages in the finisher's marquee and plenty of giveaways to top up a very nice goody bag. You should do this race just for the scenery and for the hospitality of the local people.

Fundraising

Depending on the distance you choose you should aim for a different fundraising target. The half marathon should offer you the opportunity to raise up to £750 and go for £300 in the 10K. Think of some suitably Irish theme nights. Check out the run for charity fundraising A to Z for some great ideas to help you reach your target.

Support on race day

There is a moderate amount of spectator support on race day but not too much to speak of. The charity support is very much focused around the official charity but you will see a few other charity vests taking on the wind.

Training

You will simply need to pick up a 10k or half marathon training plan and if possible practice running in windy areas as this race can get pretty blowy!

Quality of race organisers

The race organisers put on a very good event for a smaller field size. The race is well marshalled and the roads are always cleared with plenty of time. All of the information you require is pretty much at hand but the website could do with a few additional details for beginner runners. nIce goody bags but no medal with this race.
