Bristol Half Marathon

The Bristol Half Marathon is a great race in the Southwest of England that offers a great challenge for the charity runner. It is now laid out on a very flat and fast course and is designed to help runners of all abilities to gain a personal best in the race. Bristol brings some great sites to each and every runner including a stretch by the river Avon and a bolt under Brunel's historic Suspension Bridge.

About the race

The Bristol Half Marathon has grown from strength to strength over the last few years and really is one of the top half marathons in the country now. At the start you can see a fantastic level of charity support and the race organisers appear very keen to help this grow. When you get going unfortunately you have to deal with a 7 mile stretch of motorway which is very dull. The good thing is once this is behind you the rest of the race is very flat and there is a plenty of great sites to see. The spectators are much more visible around the city centre and really give it their all when cheering you on. All of the charity support at the end of the course really helps the event as you will see charities cheering on every runner who passes by which is why charities really do make these big races. Heart Fm are really vocal on the day and they have made it their mission to promote the charities involved in the race which is another huge plus point for any charity runner involved. The end is well presented and managed and make sure you take advantage of the freebies in the race village as there is always an excess of things for you to pick up.

Fundraising

This is a large running event and there is a great opportunity to raise a good amount of money for your chosen charity. Aim for at least £750 with this race. Get rid of all your old stuff on eBay and that will get you most of the way there!

Support on race day

The Bristol half sees a plenty of support on race day, the people in the West country are always keen to be part of a party atmosphere and the Bristol Half Marathon is no exception. The course is not always packed the whole way around but the start and finish are always great fun.

Training

This is a very flat and fast course so simply use a training plan for a half marathon, you should be thinking about a PB on this one.

Quality of race organisers

The team that put on the Bristol Half always do a very good job from start to finish. Before the race everything is as it should be and they have made the event feel bigger than it is on race day which is an achievement in itself. The t-shirts and medals are very good value but the goody bags are a bit of a waste of time. Just keep it and fill your bag up with other giveaways after the race.
