With 18,000 runners taking part in the Barcelona Marathon in 2013, this is a rapidly growing event that takes place around one of Europe's most beautiful cities. With the start and finish line alongside the fantastic Magic Fountains (which get turned on especially for the race) and a loop course that takes in the Bernebau Stadium, the Sagrada Familia, Les Ramblas, the beach area and the Pedrera, this marathon is like taking in a sight-seeing tour of Barcelona!
Aim for around the £1,000 mark when it comes to fundraising and make sure you set yourself a gradual target.
The support at this race is great for the numbers with a large number of cheer-heroes sitting cheering on individuals! Be sure to put your name on your vest as well to hear those personal cheers!
This is a fairly flat course however there are a few very minor hilly stretches so with a good six months training (look at our marathon training guide) you should be able to set yourself a strong time.
There are very well stocked fuelling stations every 5km with a wide range of goods to help you around the course from water to gels to fruit and the marshals are very helpful (90% of whom speak English as well) As mentioned, this race has a great reputation for being really well organised with an excellent expo, people getting over the start line in good time and free massages at the end to ease to weary muscles!
