Shannon Trust supports people to learn to read and improve their numeracy skills, using our evidence-based learning programmes, Turning Pages and Count Me In.
Currently, over 70% of people in prison, and 15% in the wider community, struggle with literacy, and even more struggle with numeracy. We train people in prison who can read and support with numeracy (mentors) to teach those who can’t (learners). In the community, volunteers support learners.
Our programmes reduce re-offending, and provide people with better future outcomes including further education and employment. We also break the cycle of intergenerational low literacy and low numeracy. Our vision is a future where nobody is left out of learning.
