Windsor Half Marathon

This is a good running event in the South East of England and very suitable for the charity runner. The area is very pleasing to the eye and with sites such as Windsor Castle in the background, you will not be disappointed if this is a planned weekend away.

About the race

You start the race at the unusual time of 1pm along with a few 1000 other keen runners. The general feel and enthusiasm around the race is really good and there is a great atmosphere created by a plentiful number of local spectators. The charity support around the race is very noticeable as you get going mostly for the official charities A good group of supporters from other charities will also make the journey to cheer on their runners. As you start to get into your stride in the Great Park, you are taken passed Bishops gate and the Prince Consorts Statue which are both very picturesque sites. The second half of the race is a repeat of the first after doing the aptly named long walk and is, therefore, not quite as interesting as the first. The support levels do begin to rise as you near the finish of the race. The race as a whole is reasonably hilly, it is nothing too strenuous if you have put the training in but at times you might wish you had done a little more hill training. When finishing the race, you are greeted by a sea of happy faces and you are almost pleased that you are not doing the whole thing once more, even if you have a marathon distance in your legs.

Fundraising

This race is promoted heavily in favour of the official charities but there is always room for you to fundraise for your chosen charity. Look to raise £700 in this half marathon, make sure you plan your fundraising endeavours way in advance.

Support on race day

This race sees a good level of support and with over 5000 people taking to the streets, you would expect nothing less. There is a moderate level of charity support on the day, mostly centred around the official beneficiaries of the race.

Training

A flat half marathon on the roads around Windsor, so just allow yourself the correct time to train for a half marathon.

Quality of race organisers

It is easy to enter the race but the website could be a little more informative. All information is sent out well in advance,so no complaints here. On the day, the race is well organised and marshalled, just a shame they use cups at the water stations instead of bottles. The medal is one of the better ones but the goody bags are not what they should be for a race of this size.
