Think about how many times you’ve read something today. The news, social media, food packaging, a letter or a story. Most of us take our ability to read for granted, but over 2.4 million adults in England alone struggle with this basic requirement for everyday life. A staggering 5% of the adult population have no reading skills at all (known as Entry Level 1). [Skills for Life Survey, 2011]
Read Easy UK is a national charity which provides free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching for adults from trained volunteers, through locally-run, affiliated volunteer groups.
Helping adults learn to read is so much more than enabling them to enjoy a good book. Our Readers tell us about how learning to read has increased their confidence and self-esteem. How they have grown in independence and can support their children and grandchildren with reading activities.
Everyday tasks such as paying household bills, using public transport, filling in forms, reading instructions and doing the weekly shop are no longer overwhelmingly challenging when someone learns to read.
With your fundraising and support we can open new local Read Easy groups across the country to provide more free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching for adults.
