Action on Postpartum Psychosis the only charity in the UK providing information, support and advocacy for women and families affected by postpartum psychosis (PP).
PP is one of the most severe forms of postnatal mental illness. It can happen ‘out of the blue’ to women without previous experience of mental illness, and normally begins in the first few days after childbirth. Around 1400 women are diagnosed with PP every year in the UK, but many people have never heard of it until they or their loved one is affected.
With the right treatment, women with PP do make a full recovery but it takes time and the journey may be tough. For those who experience PP, their partners, friends and family, it can be hard to find high quality information about the symptoms, causes and treatment.
This is where APP come in. We provide an award winning peer support network for mums and their families. We facilitate research into PP, provide high quality training for healthcare professionals, and work to raise awareness of PP and break down the stigma that can surround a diagnosis.
