The British Porphyria Association

The British Porphyria Association is a national charity that supports patients with porphyria and their families across the UK and Ireland.

The porphyrias are a group of relatively rare genetic disorders. In each porphyria, a specific enzyme needed to complete a step in the pathway to produce haem (a necessary element of blood), is faulty. Porphyrins accumulate causing severe medical problems.

We aim to help people understand their condition better, access appropriate and timely care, and connect with others in the same boat.

We also promote awareness of porphyria among medical professionals and contribute to medical research into this rare condition.
