African Children’s Fund is a small, UK-based charity making a difference to children born into poverty. Our work with grassroots NGO partners in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe in education and children’s rights is making a real difference to the lives of almost 4,000 children every year. The projects we support are run by local staff who are committed to - and know the needs of - their own communities.
The biggest programme we support is a Porridge Clubs scheme in Kenya which operates in primary schools in and around the town of Thika. Porridge Clubs support children’s education by encouraging school attendance and the completion of primary education. This simple, cost-effective solution to school absence enables 2,500 children to go to school every day rather than working, scavenging or begging on the streets.
Other activities we support range from sanitary towel and educational resource distribution programmes, to legal aid and slum dweller education forums promoting children’s rights.
